Taxpayers Federation Applaud Progressive Conservatives Commitment to Set Fixed Election Dates

Author: Adrienne Batra 2003/05/25
WINNIPEG: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation reacted to the Progressive Conservative Party's commitment to amend the Manitoba Elections Act to establish a set election date every four years.

"Since this election began there has been little discussion on democratic reform and today the PC Party of Manitoba has taken an important step in restoring confidence to our electoral process," stated Provincial Director Adrienne Batra. "The CTF has been calling for fixed election dates as elections are the ultimate tool for citizens to hold their government accountable and pass judgement on the job their elected officials are doing. Setting election dates should not be a game of Russian roulette."

The only province in Canada that has fixed election dates is British Columbia, however the Opposition parties in both Saskatchewan and Ontario, both serious contenders to become the next government in their respective provinces, have also committed to fixed election dates.

"We are pleased to see that two of the three major political parties are committed to restoring the democratic process. We hope the NDP will also commit to bring our electoral process into the 21st Century," concluded Batra.
